Automation Activities

A number computer servers and workstations are installed in the University Library for Modernising and Automation of the Library operations and Services. The Library resources materials have been computerised by using LIBSYS software. The LIBSYS software is an integrated Library Management Software used for library automation. The various sections that are automated are :

Barcoding of Membership Identity Cards

The Faculty, Non-Teaching Staff, Research Scholars and Students of the University are issued a single barcoded Membership cum Library Identity card. The users of the library can use the same Identity card for borrowing books.

On-line Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) Service

The computerised bibliographic details of the books, theses, reports, U.N. documents, etc. are available in the library through the OPAC(On-line Public Access Catalogue) service. Ten computer systems are provided to the users of the library for this service. The users can search the databases in different ways, viz :

In addition to that, the availability of journals issues and bound volumes are also obtained using the OPAC service. Whenever a journal issue is arrived, the same is entered immediately in the computer and hence the availability of journal issues can be accessed from the system. In addition the details of books borrowed by the members can also be seen.

Most of the users of the Library are using the On-line Public Access Catalogue to find the holdings of the University Library.

Users can avail the OPAC facility on intra-net through the browser based WEBOPAC module.

E-Resources(On-line) Access & Internet Service

E-Resources are the result of rapid development of Internet facility in the Libraries. It is most useful to the Research Scholars and other users of the library. The scholarly resources available on-line can be browsed and searched in different ways and thereby save the search time of the users.

Access to e-resources (e-Books e-Databases and e-Journals) is available through UGC-INFONET and Pondicherry University’s own subscription/purchase. Users could access more than 31417 scholarly resources covering different subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Management, Arts and Humanities, etc.

Pondicherry University is wi-fi enabled campus with 128 MBPS and 150 MBPS internet connectivity. The library is providing full time browsing facility/internet connectivity for the students and other users.

More than fifty computer systems are provided to the users of the library to access the above facilities. All the on-line resources are available on the Intranet.

Browsing Facility for Visually Challenged

Pondicherry University in its mission of “Expansion, Excellence and Equity” is progressive in taking steps to make its library inclusive and disabled friendly. Barrier free environment like ramps, rails, lift, wheel chairs, etc are provided to the differently abled persons. However, the Visually Challenged should be benefited from the library services and should be able to access the digital resources through the University/Library portal. By providing necessary tools and services to the Visually Challenged, their academic skills could be drastically enhanced and will give the feel that they are part of the academic society. Keeping this in mind, three desktops with book scanners and necessary audio software are provided to enhance the skills of visually challenged users.

UGC-INFONET JCCC Document Delivery Service

J-Gate Custom Content for Consortium (JCCC) is a virtual library of journal literature created as a customized e-journals access gateway and database solution. It acts as a one point access to 7900+ journals subscribed currently under UGC INFONET Digital library consortium as well as university libraries designated as Inter Library Loan (ILL) Centers besides index to open access journals. INFLIBNET has identified 22 potential universities as ILL Centers in the country to fulfill ILL request from the users affiliated to universities covered under UGC- INFONET Digital Library Consortium. Pondicherry University is one among the 22 ILL Centres.

JCCC has facility to trigger e-mail request for article to Inter Library Loan Centers as well as to INFLIBNET Centre.

Information & Library Network (INFLIBNET) of UGC

INFLIBNET is to be a computer-communication network for linking Libraries and Information centres in Universities, Deemed Universities, UGC Information Centre, etc.

Pondicherry University Library, being a part of the INFLIBNET programme of UGC, has been associated from the beginning, in all the deliberations regarding INFLIBNET. Library database creation work has been carried out as per the standards approved by the INFLIBNET Centre, Ahmedabad.

Pondicherry University Library stands SECOND among the participating University Libraries in creation of Bibliographic Databases. Pondicherry University Library is identified as one of the core libraries in contribution towards Compilation of Union Catalogue by INFLIBNET.

On-line access to more than 6900+ scholarly journals (e-journal access) has been provided to the Pondicherry University by the INFLIBNET Centre through its UGC-INFONET consortia.
