The Library is renowned for its disabled friendly modern infrastructure (80,000 sq. ft), fully air-conditioned, WIFI enabled, services for the Visually Challenged among the proactive services with RFID technology and 24/7 remote access its collection.

History

Pondicherry University was established on 16th October 1985. Pondicherry University Library was established on 11th September 1986 in Ram International Hotel, Anna Salai, Pondicherry and with one Deputy Librarian and two Assistant Librarians. It was moved to the present locale as an independent building in July 1990 with a carpet area of 31,304 sq. m.

The Central Library of Pondicherry University was named after Ananda Rangapillai because of Ananda Ranga Ravichandran, one of the descendants of Great Ananda Rangapillai who had donated 45 acres of land to Pondicherry University. The Statue of Ananda Rangapillai was donated by Ananda Ranga Ravichandran and was installed before Ananda Rangapillai library and unveiled by the then Honourable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Dr. M. Karunanidhi on 27.8.1990.

The University Library is named after Ananda Rangapillai, the Dubash of Lord Dupleix, the then Governor of Pondicherry, during the British rule. Established in 1986, it has transformed into a Knowledge Resource Centre today catering especially to the information needs of the academia. The mission of the Library is to support and supplement learning, teaching and research programmes.
